Burmese People Deprived of International Aids : Internet Service Halted

Myanmar violence has not shown any signal to returning to peace at least in the short and visible future. It is now reported that Myanmar's military junta has also ordered the internet service providers to shut down the country's wireless services, telecommunications company Ooredoo etc. Only few people in Myanmar are said to have access to such hard-line internet services.

Earlier to  this, United Nation's residential representative in Myanmar, Andrew Kirkwood, had warned that the security situation might be worse and be out of control in the coming days. Quoting Kirkwood's statement, BBC said the security force in Myanmar had been using fatal force widely, knowingly and with plannings over its citizens. As mentioned by him, more than 90 percent deaths were caused by bullets and mostly hit on the head by sharp shooters deployed for killings.

UN Security Council has strongly condemned the act of violence against the peaceful protesters. However, China refused the proposal in the Security council to sanction the Military Ruler, saying the step of sanctioning Myanmar would add more tension. Britain, a member of the UN Security Council, had asked for an urgent Security Council meeting after the massacre on last Saturday killing more than 115 people.

As mentioned by BBC quoting to a local observer group on Thursday, the death toll has reached 536. Along with that, Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi has also been accused of violating the Myanmar's Secrecy Act, too. It is said the charges filed against her are sufficient to lead her to the jail sentence for 14 years.

In the general election held in 2020, Suu Kyi's party, National League for Democracy NLD had won more than the 322 seats needed to form a majority government. But the military denied the result of the election saying the election was held unfairly.

In the background, although India, through India's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador T S Tirumurthi's tweets, lately condemned the violence in Myanmar and condoled the loss of life urging maximum restraint and calling for the release of detained leaders, none of the representatives of the BIMSTEC, including India's foreign minister, spent a word against the Myanmar violence during the 17th ministerial meeting held virtually on Thursday. The ministerial meeting of the regional countries was expected to find an appropriate solution via diplomatic actions during such a big international forum, to the crisis of one of the BIMSTEC and neighbouring nations, Myanmar.

Unfortunately, but the great meeting held after a good preparation in the secretariate level placed the Myanmar agenda out of the boarder even without uttering a single word that might be bitter to the military junta. The deadly silence among the member nations of this region about such a huge international issue related to the act of human rights violation has produced a pile of doubts ragarding the effectiveness of the organization in handling the national and  intra-regional issues to maintain peace and preserve human rights in the regional countries.

Worthy to mention here is, since the coup on 1 February had sparked protests and other acts of civil disobediences leading to the deaths of hundreds of unarmed civilians in military crackdown, Myanmar has fallen into the state of civil war. United States and some western nations have declared some sanctions against iunta, however, that has earned little response from the military ruler. Meanwhile, Japan has stopped providing new aids to Myanmar, but showing much affection to the military ruler, it has declared the previously started programs and projects to keep on running. These all international response towards myanmar indicate that they think the nobel prize winning democratic leader Ms Aung San Suu Kyi and her party NLD are not able to rule over the country, or they gain more advantage from the military regime than from the democratic rule under Ms Suu Kyi. Otherwise, the military would have been forced at least to stop practising bloodshed on the home ground.
