A beauty pageant contestant from Myanmar attracted attention of the world when she spoke against the suppression of the Myanmar's military ruler while giving a short speech at the Miss Grand International 2020 event in Thailand.

Han Lay, who is 22, called on the international communities to turn their eyes on the deadly situation developed in Myanmar after the military coup on 1 February. Speaking in the program, Ms. Lay said, 'Today in my country Myanmar, ...there are so many people dying.' She further insisted the international stakeholders to help Burma and the Burmese people saying,  'Please help Myanmar. We need your urgent international help right now.'
In response to the step taken be the military to seize power from the civilian leaders, tens of thousands of people came to the streets nationwide to protest against the coup. 

She then informed that the military or other offcials had not contacted her but they used to threaten her through the social media. She further added ragarding her return to Myanmar in the near future saying, 'When I go back to Myanmar, ... prison is waiting for me'. In spite of the vast majority of social media comments being supportive,  she said she didn't know who was behind such threatening remarks.

In Myanmar, more than 540 people, including more than 40 children, have already been shot to death by the security forces.

A little over a month ago, Han Lay, the young beauty queen, was also on the streets of Yangon, Myanmar's largest city, protesting against the military coup. No strong and effective step from the international community, not even from the recenty held ministerial meeting of the BIMSTEC, has been taken for the Burmese people yet.
